Suzuki motor corporation has made cars, ATV's, dirt bikes, and a lot of other stuff. I'm going to talk about how Suzuki got into the dirt bike industry. The reason why I'm doing Suzuki specifically is that I ride a Suzuki rm 85, so I have a general feeling for Suzuki and their bikes. Anyway, let's get to the point. Back in 1909, Mr. Michio Suzuki had established a thriving business called Suzuki loom company, based in Japan. For thirty years, weaving looms were Suzuki's only focus.
With the demand for civilian transport on the increase, he began designing several prototype motorcars. But, World War 2 made the Japanese government decide that cars were not a priority. So they began focusing on the motorcycle industry.
In 1952, the 'Power Free' was born. It was a bicycle-powered by a 36cc two-stroke motor. Definitely not a bike built for motocross. By 1954, Suzuki was mainly producing motorbikes and had changed its name to Suzuki Motor Co Ltd. From there on as the market demand, people's needs and wants, and discretionary income changed, motorbikes developed into lifestyle choices. Rather than just providing a fun motorcycle, companies like Suzuki began creating 'free time machines' such as the range of Suzuki dirt bikes and road cruisers as we know them today.
