SPILLS OF RANDOMNESSS # 6 - Students Should Be Required to Play an Instrument

I love music. There is probably not a part of my life that is not affected by music. It is emotionally connecting and intellectually enhancing. In other words, it is really good for you, and playing an instrument is a really good way to connect to music and enhance brain performance, which brings us to the whole point here. It is evident that all students should be required to play at least one instrument.

For example, playing an instrument can help your comprehension and processing, due to the emotional connections we have to the music. Playing an instrument can also be mentally challenging, such as if you were to play a wind instrument, where you can not see the keys you are playing, or piano, where you have to play two different things at once. The University of Montreal agrees, according to a new study they are doing. "As people get older, for example, we know their reaction times get slower," lead researcher Landy says, "So if we know that playing a musical instrument increases reaction times, then playing an instrument will be better for them." So, basically, if you play an instrument, you won't be so quick to lose your mind when you get older.

Furthermore, playing an instrument can increase resilience to loss of hearing. While playing an instrument, you need to listen to notes and learn to discern certain notes from others, which requires a sharp sense of hearing. A 2013 study showed that people with only moderate musical training preserved sharp processing of speech sounds. It was also able to increase resilience to age-related decline in hearing. Being able to play an instrument can enable you to hear better and for a longer period of your life. Basically, it will take longer for you to become an old, decrepit bean.

Admittedly, instruments are hard to learn and can take a lot of time away from doing other things, but children would probably just be sitting around on the couch and eating things that are unhealthy for them anyway, and the challenge of learning to play an instrument is good for your brain.

You will enhance your brain performance and become much smarter if you play an instrument and there is no reason why students should not be required to play an instrument like they are required to take other classes.

Things That Make Me Happy

Halo everyone. This week, I am out of ideas on things to write about. To be honest, I don't really want to write at the moment anyway. However, I know I need to. I really would just like to do something else that is not at all productive, so I decided to combine these two ideas that no one really asked for. Well..., here you go.

Scented candles

Scented candles make me very happy. I just can't help it, but I love them. I always get distracted when we go to the store and I see big candle displays, I need to go smell all of the candles. I need to. It is necessary. Once, we were in BJ's, and they had a big box of the Yankee candle holiday edition. I went to sniff one, The lid wouldn't come off, and when I did pull it off I used so much force that the candle flew out of my hand and to the floor, making a noise so loud that the produce department heard it.

Through Pillows

I think through pillows are under-rated. They are so pretty. They make a room look so complete. They tie a room's color scheme. They are perfect to lean on when you are sitting on a chair or sofa. People can put art on them, and they really add personality to a room. Have you ever stopped to appreciate a good throw pillow? I doubt it. But, I hope after reading this you do.

Hamilton

Wow. I am listening to the soundtrack now. The vocals are amazing. I love the story. I want to live in hamilton. Like, in the actual musical. It is so unique and it is really a juggernaut in musical theater. The music is fantastic. Lin Manuel Maranda used hip-hop and people of all races to tell a story of the past. The most amazing choreography... Wow. Please go listen to it now. It is so full of emotion, and the cast is just so amazingly realistic and soulful. Everything a musical should be, Hamilton fulfills it, and more.
(Satisfied is my favorite song, but it is a story, so listen in order)

Harry Potter

Again, wow. I love Harry Potter so much. There are so many plot twists
and so many emotions tied to the story that you need to read the entire thing from start to finish to understand. I don't really have words to describe how great this is, which should show how great it really is. To be honest, it is less a series of books and more a religion. You should look into it. You will find a large cult on the internet. I have nothing else to say about it. Just read it... you will understand.

Why K-Pop is Underrated

Whenever I tell people ‘I only really listen to k-pop’, the first question I’m asked is ‘why?’ Why do I listen to music I can’t understand? That’s like asking someone who listens to classical music ‘why bother listening if there’s nothing to sing along to?’. There’s SO MUCH more to music than just lyrics; and while, yes, good lyrical content can make or break songs (I’ve deleted k-pop songs from my playlists after reading how childish the lyrics are, by the way), there’s so much more that makes a song what it is. Everything ranging from chordal progressions to tonal inflections can make or break a song. The way the instrument (or vocals) are mixed can even impact the meaning of the song. Take off your blinders and look past the language barrier-- there’s so much more that’s beneath the surface.
Why not listen to music that’s more relevant? If any of you watched the Billboard Music Awards this year, then you’d know that BTS, a K-POP group, beat everyone else in the social category by an incomparable landslide. If k-pop was not relevant outside of Korea, then how else could they have won that award, hm?
Why is regular music not good enough for you? My appreciation for k-pop does not imply that everything else is beneath my standards. That’s not the case at all. Ariana Grande, Ellie Goulding, Fall Out Boy, Panic At The Disco, Major Lazer, Childish Gambino, and so many more English-speaking artists have my respect, love, and parts of my previous paychecks in support of their music.
For me, what sets k-pop apart is the interactive aspect, especially after my KCON experience. These artists’ lives are built around their fans, and no matter the size of their fanbase, their appreciation is evident in every glance they share or every tweet they like. Yes, I’m aware that English-speaking artists do the same. However, I’d suggest looking up the kinds of processes idols have to go through before receiving opportunities like this-- it’s so much more than luck and a recording deal. They fight so hard for the chance to perform and see their fans, and in every single interaction, there is no question about it. They love us. We’re the motivation that keeps them going and vice versa. It’s something that can only truly be understood from a k-pop stan’s perspective once you start reading into it.
Why do you support an industry that doesn’t care about you or supports negative ideals? My appreciation for k-pop does not imply that I endorse everything that South Korea embraces. For example, I hate the grueling process to debut. Many artists can train for upwards of 10 years and their company still won’t give them the chance to debut. In this season of Produce 101 (a competition to build a boy group), there were initial rumors that the lowest-ranked trainees got fed leftovers and scraps and the worst sleeping conditions as ‘punishment’ for their low rank and ‘motivation’ to climb higher. These things are inhumane, and I don’t endorse it. I also don't endorse the racial aspect. Korean fansites (the equivalent of American paparazzi) are known for whitewashing pictures of the artists to fit the Korean beauty standard. Some artists themselves - who I no longer stan - have been caught saying things offensive to those with darker skin. However, there is movement in a more positive direction. Alex of RaNiA is the first African-American to debut in a k-pop group, and her reception so far has been relatively good! More fans are speaking out against artists whenever they say or do culturally insensitive things, and awareness is starting to grow. My expectations aren’t unrealistic, but the fact that fans aren’t blind to the injustice of it does give me hope and does make me feel comfortable supporting the artists that also do not endorse those ideals.
Why be associated with fans that crazy? This question usually refers to the crazy stories of fans going too far. K-pop idols have had to face stalkers, gropers, and haters. However, what artist hasn’t? Again, it’s about the music. I feel the meaning of the music through the song, and I feel the true love and passion that they put in through the final product of all their hard work. I already felt that way to begin with, but after seeing all of my favorite artists at KCON this weekend, that feeling is strengthened. Not once did I look at any of my idols and see anything that wasn’t love reflected in their eyes. Not from a crazy, stalker fan perspective, but from the perspective of a fan who really just wants my idols to be happy. They work so hard for the chance, and I am honored to be a part of their story.
Being able to see these artists live having the time of their lives changed something in me. I’m no longer shy about admitting I like k-pop. I’m proud of my favorite artists and will never again let myself feel ashamed when being asked about them. We all have our favorite artists, and many of them aren’t even American. Why does that have to stop us from listening?

The red ribbon

Hello friends and welcome to another blog post (hopefully you get my reference). Today I wanted to share with you a story that has been told many times, but I really like it and I felt like writing it again as a blog post. So... here ya go.

The red ribbon

Once upon a time, a young man met a beautiful young woman, and after a time of seeing each other, they fell deeply in love. Within a year they had wed. One thing the man had always found interesting about his wife was that she always wore a thin red ribbon almost as jewelry around her neck. And she never took it off. Not when she changed, slept, swam, nor bathed did she once take the ribbon off. Whenever he questioned her about it, she would always ignore him or change the subject. Whenever he tried to touch it or untie it, she would always exclaim, "Hey," or, "Don't touch my ribbon," and swat away his hand. Though he remained curious, eventually, he gave up on asking. Many years past and the couple had found that they had indeed grown old together. Though they had never had any children, they had a deep-rooted love for each other that had lasted a lifetime. Through all of this time, the woman had not once removed the red ribbon from around her neck. After some time the woman had caught a terrible illness. Her time had come. The man, now wrinkled, sat at the foot of the bed that belonged to the woman, now frail, as they both sat, now old, in the hospital. With eyes that still glowed like burning embers, the woman looked up at her husband's face, lives worth of love in her weary smile. "Darling, I love you deeper than the deepest oceans will ever go," she said, "And I know you have always pondered the red ribbon that I wear around my neck night and day."
"Yes, I love you to the moon and back. But why does your ribbon matter after all of these years?" he questioned, eyes poring into hers.
"Well, you have been my love for so long I feel bad keeping such secrets from you. Just know I have always loved you from the moment we first met," and with that, she used all the strength she had left to sit up and kiss him on the cheek. His face knotted into a frown, but a questioning smile at the same time. She gave a faint, knowing smile in return. With that, she reached up to the ribbon that she always kept around her neck. With a small pinch, she pulled at one of the corners of the graceful bow that had sat there, with her head lying on the pillow. With a gentle tug, the ribbon unraveled. The bow unlooped and the ends fell apart, revealing a small cut that turned to a long, skinny open wound as the ribbon gave away. The woman's head fell back, then rolled off the bed, at the man's feet. It was followed by the red ribbon, that had kept it in place the entire time.

Julie's Journey #13 - Organization and Productivity Tips

So I'm pretty sure everyone here has had some problems with being organized and productive. Well, this is where I come in. Today, I will help you with being more organized and productive. If these help you, comment below what my next blog post should be about because I'm running out of ideas already! Anyway, I hope you guys enjoy this and look forward to more of my posts.

BULLET JOURNALING:

I know, I know. You guys are probably so tired of hearing me talk about this. However, it works way better than anyone would have ever expected. I have a friend (Blogger Name: Tall Girl Takes The World a.k.a. Dakota B.) that tried bullet journaling, and needless to say, I really like how she bullet journaled. She told me the other day that mine was better and hers was trash. I, on the other hand, responded saying that it wasn't trash! If you're reading this Dakota, then I stand by what I say for as long as I live 😊. She tried it and to me, I thought it looked really good for a beginner. I also love how she didn't get too fancy. What do I mean? Well, she used regular supplies she already had. I respect that. I only got brush pens because I wanted to learn calligraphy to go with my bullet journal. She didn't get too fancy and the results were awesome! Long-story-short; if you try to bullet journal, don't worry about getting too fancy. As long it's functional, then you got yourself a well-put-together bullet journal! (Also, if you want more info...read my last blog: CLICK ME)

TO-DO LISTS:

I am pretty sure that most of y'all have tried to-do lists to help you get stuff done throughout the day. I am also pretty sure that at least 50% (maybe?) have stopped doing them because they weren't functional. Been there, done that. Well, hopefully, this helps you out. When you want to plan out something for the day, don't put it on your phone! What you want to do is actually WRITE THEM DOWN!! Guaranteed, it will help you way better than if you just type them. If you write them down then it will stick in your brain more. Also, as you write them down, it is basically your brain saying, "Hey, if you write this down, I will help you make it a reality." (if that makes sense...). Lastly, when you are going to write down your to-do list, do it before you go to bed. When you write down your to-do list before the day gets here, then it'll stick in your brain better!

JUST A COUPLE MORE STUDYING TIPS :)
  • Don't work on a bed or couch or whatever. Anything that is just asking for sleep, avoid!
  • Take a couple breaks ever 20-40 minutes.
  • In those breaks, stretch and walk around for 2-5 minutes.
  • Grab a snack to have while studying.
  • STAY HYDRATED!!!!!
  • Don't overwork or pressure yourself.
  • Study as much as you can.
  • Pick a functional, quiet place to study.
  • Plan your time.
  • Stay motivated.
  • Ask for help if needed.
  • Don't procrastinate.

Hope this helps!

CoronaVirus- (Not a blog post)

In recent news, there's been a newfound Coronavirus. It started in China, and I must report, there are now official cases in the US. It's been diagnosed in Seattle Washington. It seems to be similar to Ebola, not in the sense of physical symptoms, which resemble those of respiratory infection,  but in how it's presented. It's possible it came from an infected host animal, though I'm unsure, and it's passed person to person. There's been confirmed six deaths as of now.

Tall Girl Takes the World - Book Review #2

I want to share a book that I currently read, and thought that it was a good book for anyone who likes a little mystery. The book is called, "Two Can Keep a Secret" by Karen M. McManus and you can find it in our school library. This book is about a girl named Ellery Corcoran and her twin brother, Ezra, who goes to a town called Echo Ridge. They find out that in this small town, a mysterious serial killer has a fondness of homecoming queens. As the book goes on, Ellery and Ezra try to figure out the mystery of Echo Ridge where people disappear, like Ellery's aunt, and shady shenanigans that draw them closer to finding out the truth. It also has some chapters about another character called, Malcolm, who also goes through some problems. I rate this book an 8/10 because I also liked trying to figure out the secret that the small town was going through. Warning! This book has some bad language in it so if you do not like cursing then I do not recommend it. It is still on accelerated reader if you want to take a quiz for it.

Organics

Halo, Everyone! Today, I asked my mom what I should write about, and she suggested to write about how eating Organic is better than not. So, I compiled some reasons that I think are valuable to know, and hopefully, this encourages you to eat more organics.

1. Avoiding GMOs and Artificial chemicals
Although GMOs are a rather new thing, artificial chemicals have been used in processed and non-organic food for over forty years. Because GMOs are have only been around for twenty-six years, we don't know the long term effects of them. That in itself is extremely scary. What we do know as of right now is that some people are very allergic to GMOs and get really bad stomach aches from eating them. Artificial chemicals are just straight up not good for you. I can't put it any other way. Chemicals made in a factory that are put into our food. Yikes.

2. Supports the Environment and Agriculture
It's better for agriculture! Agriculture is very important for our economy, and by supporting organics you support small farmers and local businesses rather than huge corporate factory companies. Organic meat (most of it) is grass-fed. That is better for the environment as well, because then that livestock is not eating factory-made food. It is also better for the environment because organic plants are not modified with chemicals, so there are no chemicals going into the earth.

3. It is Better for Your Body in General
No, Organic does not always mean healthier. Organic junk food does exist. But, if you go out of your way to not eat junk food, then it is really good for you. This is because organic food is cleaner than other food. Clean food is food that has fewer ingredients, no chemicals, and all-natural things. There are more vitamins and minerals in clean food.
Well... there ya go. I hope you enjoyed this post about organics, and I will see you on Tuesday.

Julie's Journey #12 - Why I Bullet Journal...

So many of you guys know that I love bullet journaling. Some people have asked me what it is and others ask me why I even do it. Well, today I am going to tell you all about it and why I love it so much.

So to start off, what is bullet journaling? Well, it was invented by Ryder Carroll, a digital product designer. In Carroll's words, bullet journaling is to help you track the past, organize the present, and plan for the future. Carroll invented this technique in the '90s and was looking for a simple method of personal organization for college. Thus, came bullet journaling.  Another reason for his idea is since he was diagnosed with deficit (deh-fuh-sit) disorder (which is a range of behavioral problems) as a kid, he wanted to build a system to help "move past his learning disabilities." This idea is an amazing system that keeps track of everything you want to put in it.

When did I start? Well, my sister is the one who told me about it. At I think March 24, 2019, my sister was talking to me about bullet journaling and how she always wanted to do it. I looked up some pictures and videos and completely fell in love. In around late July, early August, I started the actual practicing. Not with brush pens but just with regular pens. I only practiced the hand lettering and faux calligraphy. Then, on August 15th, my birthday came. Well, the day before my birthday. My mom gave me gifts and cake on the 15th instead of the 16th. I didn’t really mind though. My mom surprised me with a dotted notebook and colored brush pens along with black ones. I did get other stuff, but that’s what stuck out to me the most. As I started practicing, I absolutely loved it. I never knew that bullet journaling was even something I would like. After I practiced some more, I started bullet journaling for January 2020.

Why do I do it? Well, that’s a very easy question. I started bullet journaling to help with my organization. Some people in school think that I am very organized. Well, guess what? I’m not! My locker is very different from my bedroom. However, I did it to help me get more productive and organized and so far, it’s working. Some things in bullet journaling conclude mood trackers, habit trackers, book trackers, basically all the trackers. Then again, there’s so much more to bullet journaling than trackers. But yeah, long story short, I do it because it helps me stay organized and productive. So, if you want to be more organized, you should definitely try bullet journaling.
Guaranteed it will help you so much throughout the year.

At the Governor Mifflin invitational I am doing a 100 fly, 200IM, and last but the one I am most nervous about is the 500 freestyle. Jenna Kirby is gonna be my counter and I am super nervous about it because I am not a distance swimmer or a sprinter, I guess I am like just in the middle. But either way, I am already freaking out about it. I am training more for it this and next week at Body Zone to practice 500s.

Why you Should Join a Sport

You should join a sport because it gets you in shape. If you like team sports you should join Basketball, Baseball, and Football. But if you like solo sports you should join Wrestling boxing, Jin Jitsu, Karate, and MMA. All the sports are fun but the singular sports, in my opinion, will get you in the best shape. The solo sports are more physical then team sports except for tennis so you slam people in wrestling punch people in boxing do chokeholds in Jin Jitsu and in MMA is like wrestling and boxing combined. That is why you should join a sport.

CEREAL IS NOT SOUP

So today, our daily warm-up form had the question 'Is a hotdog a sandwich?'. To that, I say of course not, and it infuriates me that some people say otherwise. However, there is only one stupid ongoing argument that I have already won that infuriates me more. Some people claim that cereal is soup.
Oh my god. I will first start by saying NOOOOOOOOOOO. Cereal is NOT a soup. The reasons why are as follows.
m
A.) Cereal is sweet. You may be saying 'Well what about butternut squash soup?'. But Butternut squash soup is salty. Can you think of a salty soup? Of course, you can, tons of soups are naturally salty from the stock they are made of, or salt is added to taste. Can you think of a salty cereal? o, you can't because that sounds disgusting. You had to totally different reactions when envisioning those two things because they are two totally separate foods.
m
B.) Cereal is a breakfast food. You eat cereal for breakfast and no other meal. That is just how it works.
m
C.) Cereal is made with milk. Soup is made with the stock of an animal or vegetable. Cereal has milk, which is not a stock. All soup is made with stock of some kind. Therefore, it can not be soup.
m
I thank you for reading this and know you see why I am right. I would like to close this by saying hotdogs are not sandwiches, cereal is not soup, and the chicken came first.

WWIII might just happen and us Americans will not be blamed for it. (Well only one).

WWIII is apparently a thing now.

January 1st we were celebrating the new year. January 2nd Australia is still burning. January 3rd WWIII fears have started.

Donald Trump killed the 2nd most important person in the whole country of Iran. The first is the president, obviously. Qasem Soleimani was Iranian major general in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and was killed on January 3rd. The president of Iran has already said that he does not want harm to come to the American people at all, so we are considered safe right now. He just wants our president who probably just started WWIII for America and could kill even more people. Iran's president wants Trump so bad that he has posted an 80 million dollar bounty for him! But I would not suggest making jokes or post on social media that you would do the bounty because that could be considered treason and you would be in jail for the rest of your life or even the death penalty in some states. Treason is a class A felony and is a very serious thing as much as some people think he deserves what he gets for putting America in very serious danger, I do not plan on going to jail for treason. Also, Dear Iran, I did not vote for our president neither did any of my family members and I plan to move to Iceland as fast as possible. #Democrat

My Favorite Movies

Ok, so I love movies I love good movies to be exact and these are my favorites. After, every movie I will put it's rotten tomatoes score a lot of people think that the higher the Rotten Tomatoes score the lower the worse, but it is the opposite.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) 88%

I talk about this movie all the time. I love this thing, it is scary, it has awesome cinematography, and it has great characters. This film scared me more than any other film has. The villainous family that are also cannibals are scary. The stand-out for most people is Leatherface My favorite is the cook A.K.A Drayton Sawyer.

Psycho (1960) 96%

Psycho is a film directed by the most legendary director of all time Alfred Hitchcock. I love this guys movies, but this has to be one of the best of his. Hitchcock made this film in classic B&W even though by this point all movies were in color. He made this film B&W because he thought the film was too gory, so blood would slip by easier. The film is masterful. It is full of great and iconic shots, great characters including one of the scariest villains in a film ever! The film has great twists and turns by the end.

The Cornetto Trilogy

Shaun of the dead 92%
Hot Fuzz 91%
The World's End 89%
These are all 3 films of the cornetto trilogy, a trilogy of films that all star Simon Pegg and Nick Frost and feature a flavor of Cornetto's ice cream. These are 3 of the funniest films I have ever seen. I love all the characters. I love the characters portrayed in these films.

Gremlins (1984) 84%

Gremlins is a film about a boy who buys this pet from a Chinese shop. There are 3 rules for this creature when these rules are broken the pet becomes a bunch of little green monsters who destroy everything. This film is hilarious, I laugh out loud every time. The scene where the mom kills all the gremlins in her kitchen.

King Kong (1933) 98%

The original King Kong is one of the first stop-motion monster films, The Lost World (1925) was first. The Stop-motion technique was popular till the mid-'50s when the man in a suit technique called Tokusatsu. This film is iconic from the beginning to the end. The fight scenes are amazing. The characters are great. This is considered to be the greatest Monster film ever made

Frankenstein (1931) 100%!!!!

Frankenstein is one of the coolest monsters ever! He is a misunderstood creature who is actually not to bad, but the village people are mean and burn him to death. The film takes its time introducing the monster, and most of the movie is about the scientist who made him. Yes! technically the scientist is named Frankenstein not the monster and true, but I will still call the monster Frankenstein. Anyway, this movie is great go watch it.

The Shining 85%

This is the only horror film from director Stanley Kubrick and it is one of the best of all time. This film is about a man who goes to a haunted hotel and goes crazy that is all I will say. The cinematography is great and so is the brilliant directing by Kubrick.

The Kid 100%

Charlie Chaplin's first feature is the best of his and he has some greats. This film is about a man who discovers an orphan and then raises him until... the orphanage wants him back. This is a great film that has no sound because it is from 1921, so almost 100 years ago. This film is hilarious and dramatic at the same time, truly Chaplin's best.

Shadow of a Doubt 100%

This is another one of Hitchcock's best. This time the film stars a teenage girl who is excited when her Uncle Charlie comes to visit her Family. She begins to feel suspicious of him. Uncle Charlie notices her suspicions and as of it turns out Uncle Charlie is a murder. This is Hitchcock's favorite of his films and I would agree that it is up there.
