protect dissent
Imagine a living in a dictatorship of the few, now imagine they were so cunning that they could have 100% control and still make you imagine you’re free, now open your eyes and look into the real world a world where 1 percent of people make more than they need while 50 percent make less than 5 dollars. Because I believe in democracy I believe in decentralizing the neoliberal wasteland that is the media.
The first reason is an over centralized media is bad is that it hurts democracy ”The Internet is not an instrument of mass communication for those lacking brand names, an already existing large audience, and/or large resources. Only sizable commercial organizations have been able to make large numbers aware of the existence of their Internet offerings” what Chomsky is saying is that having commercialized media leads to mergers and the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer.
Another point against over centralization is that it makes us less informed about issues that help the working class at the expense of the rich “The elite domination of the media and marginalization of dissidents that results from the operation of these filters occurs so naturally that media news people, frequently operating with complete integrity and goodwill, are able to convince themselves that they choose and interpret the news "objectively" and on the basis of professional news values.¨ What this is saying is that the neoliberal policies we have on the news allows a few rich people to control what you think if you care about freedom this should scare you
Now what you might be saying is isn’t corporate news more efficient now that would be good if, keyword if, corporate news covered local news. From Harvard ¨The vast majority of information available to voters during congressional campaigns comes from local print media¨ this is showing that over centralized news which leads to less local news which in turn hurts democracy.
If you love democracy, freedom, and equality then at least try to support your local news and small online local sources and try to fact-check your information and research the other side.
