School should start later

A girl, named Claire, was sitting in class. She barely got any sleep last night, so her eyes couldn't
stay open. She was tired and in lack of attention. It wasn't her fault, she can't be forced to fall asleep
or Claire would stay up very late. Her little thoughts distracted her from the lesson. The class was
already on independent work. Claire always continued to try and sleep but her mind wouldn't shut off.
Every day in the 1st period, she would try not to sleep and couldn't understand any of her classes.
Her grades began to drop and her focus just continued to get worse. Soon, she would stay up the whole
night, awake and no sleep and feel drained the next day. Sadly many teens and children have this same
problem. Every day is such a hassle to get up for school Teens and kids are always so tired of getting up and losing focus during the day. Studies have shown, that an early start to a school day is unhealthy. There are also more studies, indicating
that a later start to a school day will lead to better grades. In my opinion, school should start later.

First, current students will be tired in the morning. A former student, Andrew Schatzman,
his school doesn’t have a later start time. According to(Three Reasons to Consider Later School StartTimes), "I fell asleep on the bus and usually wasn’t really awake until after the first
period ended’, says Andrew" This shows that students, like Andrew, don’t get enough sleep. Teenager’s
brains can’t be forced to fall asleep, the hormones in their brains are continually working. So, teens stay
up at night trying to sleep when their brain is constantly thinking about things that happened throughout
the day.

Second, you have more time to do work in the morning. “Many studies show that later school starts are
associated with better grades, higher test scores, and improved focus.”(Morin) This shows that with more sleep your grades will definitely improve. You can finish all homework
and other assignments, so you have a better chance to pass.

Some people that disagree, will not like this plan. The main reason for that is, this plan will interfere with
schedules for families and sports. Also, a different problem is that kids will be in school longer.  People will not have time to relax, and also kids will get home later from games and practices. We should only keep it 1 hour ahead instead of 2.

Children and teens need more sleep and deserve school to push the start time by an hour or 2 ahead.  For this to happen, at your school, go to your school board and request to start later in the morning. Also, you can ask a teacher or a trusted adult to help you. For some, this isn’t an easy plan but it makes kids healthy and academically stronger in school.
